OG PostcardsTHERETHERE*

by Olivier Garbay

I am a French born artist and poet who choose London more than twenty years ago to share and partake in the town exoticism and joyful eccentricity. Having lived and worked just a few streets away and still today a regular visitor of the neighbourhood, Saint Giles’ bell tower always meant one thing to

me: ”I’m Home!”, where the outcasts are protected and mingle.

It has deeply inspired this event.

I am extremely grateful to everybody involved with Saint Giles in the Fields to allow me to present you today with these works:

*… As if a string of colourful notes were playing a ballad of dancing harmony of spiritual healing within the pillars of the church.

It is a carefully selected and specially made collection of 12 tapestries (Under 10 titles, one being a tryptic), all made out of hand-picked, hand-cut and hand-sewn fabric stretched on pinewood frames.

The way they are made underline a conscious contribution to patience and devotion, an unconscious (?) act of contrition, a serious resolve against desolation.

A sort of POP ARTE POVERA VERA … moment.

Stitch by stitch, step by step, holding time, holding back any “fatality attack”.

The humble scraps of fabric assemble, offering their matter which brings its soft and gentle sensuality, absorbing harshness and softening angles like a string of security blankets would, brought to life in narration where, absurdly connected still profoundly pacific, abstraction is a powerful tool of communication.

The vivid images convey with a sense of joyful serenity, a reflection upon human nature today when engaging with spirituality and love.

From nearly naive to frankly abstract their decisive, generous and blunt simplicity lives in the spirit of a celebration of the church ethics and mission, that always extends a hand to the rejected and the outcast, to present a peaceful island of calm in the heart of our great city.

To amplify the uplifting effect of sanctuary and sanctity of this space as a stronghold of human warmth, here now and forever, in Saint Giles in the Fields.

In loving memory of Hervé Gauchet, Lionnel Requier, Eric Petremann, Sebastian Horsley and Michael Wojas.

Olivier Garbay is pleased to present his fifth solo exhibition. Following on from the recent publication of his poetry by Other Criteria, Garbays’ new work continues to explore and expose his ongoing search for balance with light and encouragement and doubt and fear. His acute sensitivity to colours and textures can freely shine here as he joins them together within a mix of rigor and a sensuality strung towards a ravishing note. In The Mug, with Sarah Lucas by Other Criteria, 2009. The book was highly praised by Times critic and film director Ken Russell and quoted “Olivier Garbay has produced a provocative illuminated manuscript for the postmodern pilgrim.”

Over the years a relationship with materials established since childhood and remained young at heart, through years of practice, as basic and natural instincts well informed. Elasticity, transparency, temporality. Lately Olivier Garbay has been hand sewing a collection of pictorial and lyrical images in fabric. He presents the image of which the simple lines and designs are voluntarily restrained to a minimum, in the spirit of a Japanese Zen which would have had a profound affection for popular culture and thus developed its own style. Incorporating playful compositions which explores concepts such as Illuminations, Lightness, In and Out Sides, Memory, Glory, Elements, Laughter, Passion, Absolution…

Born in Bordeaux, in 1964, Olivier Garbay lives and works in London. Trained at Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, and has gone on to exhibit internationally as a poet and an artist. He has also gained experience working in fashion, as well as art direction and curatorial spheres. He curated the Freedom gallery shows introducing Alex Johnson, presenting Pierre et Gilles, as well as creating bespoke murals for absolute Vodka.

Previous solo exhibitions include Welcome In A World Of Difference, Freedom, London, 1996; Ramification, The Pinael Eye, London, 1999 and Nature, Concrete Space, Hayward Gallery, London, 2008. Recent group exhibitions include Venice, Toulouse, Barcelona, Malmö, 2007-8 ; RU(techne)TH(episteme)8, 2008; A Tightrope Act with the London Art Exchange/Black Maria Richard Wentworth Kings Cross 2013.

Recently he has published the following: Eat Dog, 1999; Like sherry on the cake in Yoko by Don Brown, Sadie Coles HQ, Koening books, London, 2005; God is Dad, 2005; For the love of you, I’ve known caves. in The William Blake Birthday Book published by Bow of Burning Gold, Bath, 2007; Utopia, in Stimulus/respond numero2, 2007; DyNAsty 2008 in Under/current , September 2008; IT, Christian Egger magazine Princess lulu, December 2008; The Mug, with Sarah Lucas and Other Criteria, 2009.

He has since presented his work internationally (pictures, paintings, sculptures) with such group shows as the Hamsterwheel (2007), Soufflé (2007), LucasBoschGelatin (2011), Game On (2012).

“A ripped street poster, some spillage on the pavement and their accidental compositions. The colours and textures themselves. Calling out to be selected and become here a tummy there a bum, here a mmm there a hum, here a landscape there an escape, give and take here’s a cake. Each of them clearly calling out to express their potential, to represent their personality, to shine through their own desire of association with this specific other colour and touch.” – Olivier Garbay.

Garbays’ most recent work include Gloria, And God Created Hot Pants, Precious Precariart, OCL12, Rose, Touché, Just Call Me Joe….
